The Purple Flag Initiative for International Overdose Awareness Day is a campaign aimed at raising awareness about overdose prevention and supporting individuals and communities impacted by substance use disorder. It is similar to the red ribbon campaign for HIV/AIDS awareness and the pink ribbon campaign for breast cancer awareness.

The purple flag symbolizes mourning for those who have died due to drug overdoses, as well as solidarity with those who are struggling with addiction. The initiative encourages individuals and communities to engage in activities that promote overdose prevention and awareness, such as distributing educational materials, holding vigils or memorials, and lighting landmarks or buildings in purple.

The campaign is meant to generate discussion and reduce the stigma associated with substance use disorder, as well as provide resources and support to individuals and families affected by it. It is observed in many countries worldwide on August 31st, the International Overdose Awareness Day, with the purple flag flying at half-mast to honor those who have lost their lives due to overdose.
