About the event
International Overdose Awareness Day is a global observance that aims to raise awareness on the issue of drug overdose, reduce the stigma associated with substance use disorder, provide support, and most importantly acknowledge the grief experienced by families and loved ones who have lost someone to overdose.
The day encourages people to reflect on the overdose crisis, which is a growing problem around the world. According to the World Health Organization, around 585,000 people die each year from drug use. Overdose deaths account for a significant portion of these deaths.
International Overdose Awareness Day aims to educate people about the risks associated with drug use and overdose. It also seeks to promote harm reduction strategies, such as providing access to naloxone, overdose-reversing medication, and syringe exchange programs. These strategies can save lives and reduce the harm caused by drug addiction.
The day also provides an opportunity for people to come together and remember those who have lost their lives to overdose.
